13 Ways to Recognize & Distinguish Your Baby’s Cries….

First time parents may find a crying baby to be one of the
most exasperating and alarming times.

It’s vital to remember a baby that cries is natural, and it
is the only way a infant can convey how they feel. You do
want your baby to cry so that you know when your baby is in
need of attention. Unfortunately, many people dislike the
sound of a crying baby and there are many times that a first
time parent will get flustered when their baby cries.

Opinions are different from person to person when it comes
to letting a baby “cry it out.” It is my view that to leave
a baby alone to cry does not give any baby a feeling of
safety and security that it needs in this new world it has
entered. There are many times when babies are left to cry.
They work themselves into such an emotional state that is it
even harder for the parent or caregiver to determine the
reason the baby is crying, and it takes more energy to get
them calmed down.

In this day and time the normal perception is that it’s not
possible to “spoil” a baby by being there when they cry.
When you are there the baby may actually cry less (we’ve all
witnessed the child that screams at their parents - and
everyone else – to be heard). When a baby is young they are
not able to influence and control circumstances, so it is
not possible for you to spoil them by seeing to their needs.
After all, don’t we, as parents want to provide an abundance
of complete and limitless love to our babies?

Here’s 13 reasons why babies may cry and the measures you
can take to end your baby’s cries and at once provide them
with the tender loving attention and safe baby treatment
they ought to have.

Babies usually cry due of the following reasons

1. Hunger - Feed your crying baby.

2. Wet or dirty diaper - Change your baby.

3. Pain – check to make sure that they are not being stuck
with a diaper pin, or the diaper is too tight too-tight
diaper, check their clothing for any discomforting areas.

4. Gas or Indigestion – Burp your baby and rub their
stomach.

5. Too hot or too cold – Check your babies body temp and
then change their clothing or the temp in the room as
needed. Some signs of a hot baby may be clammy or sweaty
hands and feet if hot and cold and slightly blue if cold.

6. Overly tired – Get your baby on a regular sleep routine
as soon as possible and make sure people only visit during
normal waking hours.

7. Too much stimulation – If a baby is played with too much
or handled too much this can overtax their system. Place
some calming music and stroke to encourage them to rest.

8. Lonely or bored – Yes, babies do get bored and even
lonely. You should hold your crying baby and give him/her
your complete attention.

9. Sucky – Sometime they just need to suckle on something.
Let your crying baby suck on your finger or their own
fingers, give her a pacifier or if you breast feed, they may
need that closeness with you.

10. Anger – If you ignore your baby when she is crying, she
will only get angry.

11. Scared – Loud and unfamiliar noises and people can
frighten a baby and make them cry. You need to comfort your
baby with loving touch. Hold her close to your heart so she
will be comforted by your familiar heartbeat.

12. Unwell – Sometime you baby may be unwell, look for signs
in how the cry sounds, if the skin and eyes look different,
is there a fever or change in breathing. Rock and sooth
them and call the pediatrician if there is a real concern.

13. Colicky or crying for no apparent reason (When a baby
has colic they will cry for 3 or more hours per day) -
Cuddle and sooth your crying baby by playing soft or
rhythmical music, rock her gently, rub her belly and/or give
her skin-to-skin contact. There is a possibility that you
baby may have lactose intolerance, you can check with your
doctor or homeopath about allergies and possible remedies.

When your baby starts crying, quickly go through this
checklist and make sure the baby’s needs are take care of
and there’s no visible injury. In most cases you can calm
your baby easily by:

1. Picking up and rocking your baby softly or walking with
her for a short while

2. Music is a great calming influence for babies. Hold your
baby close to your heart and slow dance with her.

3. Use a front carrier to hold your baby when you are
walking. The sound of your heartbeat is calming. (Some
believe when babies are carried in this manner they cry
less).

4. Lightly massage your baby’s back or pat their bottom

5. Speak to your baby in a gentle, reassuring voice, you can
also give her a finger to hold onto or chew on or a
pacifier.

6. Sing to your baby, they love to hear your voice, use
their name in the songs that you sing to them.

Most of all make sure that you have faith and trust in
yourself with your baby. You and your baby are on a new
journey and learning about each other. This is a drastic
life change for first time parents and the loss of sleep
during the first few months after your baby’s birth can make
you question yourself and your abilities.

The old saying, “mother knows best” is still very apt today.
Always trust your internal motherly instincts no matter what
advice you are given or may read. Remember to request the
help of your baby’s daddy, a friend, grandparent or other
relative if you feel that you are overwhelmed. There is
nothing wrong with needing and taking a break, whether it be
for a much needed nap or a trip to the salon, you will find
it does you a world of good.
